Rumored

Staggered GTA 6 unlock times are a store listing read, not a Rockstar announcement

The unlock times circulating online come from regional PlayStation Store pages, not from Rockstar. Nothing on the Newswire says when the game goes live in each local zone, so treat the entire schedule as a rumor until Rockstar puts numbers on it.

Regional PlayStation Store product pages, not Rockstar, are the only thing behind the staggered GTA 6 unlock times going around this week. The claim, as reported by Dexerto, is that those per-country listings imply the game goes live at one shared global moment, which in local terms means players in Europe and Oceania get in while North America is still waiting. Rockstar has not posted a single unlock time on its Newswire.

That distinction matters more than the hours themselves. A storefront countdown is generated from a timestamp a publisher hands to Sony, and those timestamps get corrected, re-regionalized, and quietly swapped all the time before a game of this size ships. Until Rockstar states it directly, any table of local go-live times is an inference drawn off a store page.

Where the numbers actually come from

Each regional PlayStation Store front shows its own preorder and release information, and people have been comparing those pages side by side to work out whether the launch is simultaneous worldwide or rolls out zone by zone. We have not been able to verify the individual times being quoted, so we are not printing them. What we can say is that no primary source with Rockstar’s name on it exists for them.

Sony’s own storefront behavior is part of the confusion. On PlayStation, a digital release often unlocks at midnight local time in each territory, which produces a rolling launch that starts in New Zealand. A single fixed global moment produces the opposite pattern, where one time zone gets a normal evening and another gets a workday morning. Both models have shipped major games. Nobody outside Rockstar knows which one applies here.

Why the two models split North America differently

Under a rolling midnight unlock, the continental US would be near the end of the queue simply because of where it sits on the clock. Under a fixed global moment tied to a European or Eastern time reference, the West Coast lands earlier in its own day than the East Coast. That is the whole substance of the “North America plays last” framing, and it changes completely depending on which unlock model Rockstar picks.

The practical consequence for anyone planning around release day is that preloading is the only part you can control right now. Preload windows are announced separately from unlock times, and they are tied to the platform, not the region. Our preorder page covers what each storefront has committed to so far, and the platforms breakdown explains which versions are in scope at launch.

What we will do with these times

When Rockstar publishes unlock times, they will go into the release date page as a time zone table for US readers, sourced to the Newswire and nothing else. If the store listings turn out to be right, that table will look a lot like what is circulating now. If they were placeholder values, it will not.

One more reason to hold off on planning: the schedule has already moved more than once, and the delay history is the reason we treat every unverified timestamp attached to this game as provisional.
