Every time GTA 6 has been delayed

Two delays, both announced by Rockstar itself rather than leaked. Here is the whole record with the primary source for each step, and an honest read on whether this date holds.

The short version

The date has moved Two times. Not three, not four, whatever you have read elsewhere. Both moves were announced by Rockstar in a signed post on its own Newswire, not leaked and not inferred, and both are linked above.

The game is not cancelled. There has never been a Rockstar statement, a Take-Two statement, or a platform listing suggesting otherwise.

The timeline

December 5, 2023 — announced, for 2025. The first trailer landed with a single line of commitment underneath it: coming 2025 to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S. A year, no month, no day. That is the loosest kind of commitment a publisher can make, and it is worth remembering when people describe the current date as the third or fourth promise. It was the first, and it was a year.

First delay, to May 26, 2026. Rockstar’s post said the game was now set to release on that date and, in its own words, “We are very sorry that this is later than you expected.” The reason given was needing extra time to deliver at the level of quality players expect. No mechanical explanation, no scapegoat.

Second delay, to November 19, 2026. The wording this time was more specific about the cost of it: “We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.”

That is the entire record. Two posts, two apologies, one moving date.

What the pattern actually shows

It is tempting to read two delays as a runaway project. The detail worth noticing points the other way.

The moves are getting smaller. The first slip went from an unspecified point in one year to a specific day nearly a year later. The second moved by under six months, from late May to mid November. A schedule that is falling apart tends to slip in bigger and vaguer increments, not smaller and more precise ones.

The commitments are getting harder. A year with no month is a hope. A specific Thursday, with pre-orders open, a pre-load date published and physical stock scheduled into shops, is a plan with money and retail logistics behind it. Every one of those is a commitment that costs real money to break, and they did not exist at either of the previous two announcements.

Rockstar announces its own delays. Both times the news came from the studio before it came from a leak or an earnings call. That is not a company being cornered into an admission; it is a company managing an expectation it controls.

None of that is a guarantee. It is the honest read of the evidence, and it is offered as a read rather than as a fact.

Could it move again

Yes. Anything can move, and this project has moved twice.

What would make it more likely, and what to watch for. A Take-Two earnings call is where a slip usually surfaces first, because a date change is material to guidance and has to be disclosed. A storefront listing quietly losing its date is often visible before any announcement. And a long silence after a period of steady communication has historically been the tell.

What would make it less likely, and what has already happened. Pre-orders opened months before release. A pre-load date is published. Physical copies are scheduled into shops a week before launch. Marketing has moved from teasing to showing. Those are not the actions of a studio expecting to move again, though they are not proof either.

If it does move, this is what happens here

The change lands on the release date page first, this page gets the new entry with the Newswire link, and the countdown on every page recalculates from the data rather than from anything written by hand.

We will not run a story speculating that a delay is coming, and we will not label a rumor as a delay. When Rockstar publishes, we publish. That is the whole method.

If you have money sitting with a retailer, the pre-order page covers the cancellation side of it before you need it.
