How many GB GTA 6 will take on your console

Nobody outside Rockstar knows the number, and the pages quoting one are guessing from the last game. What is confirmed is enough to plan your storage properly.

The honest answer

No install size has been published by Rockstar or either storefront. Not on the PlayStation Store listing, not on the Microsoft Store listing, not on the official site, and not in any Rockstar post.

If you have seen a specific figure quoted with confidence, it came from one of three places, and none of them is Rockstar. Somebody extrapolated from the previous game. Somebody read a placeholder value on a storefront, which is a field retailers fill in before they have real data. Or somebody repeated one of the first two.

The number will appear on the storefront listing as launch approaches, because the platforms require it before a pre-load can start. When it does, it goes here with the source attached.

What is confirmed, and why it matters more than the number

Pre-loading opens on November 12, 2026. That is a week before release, and it is the single most useful date on this page. Whatever the size turns out to be, you have seven days to pull it down at your own pace instead of competing with every other player on your platform on launch night.

The physical version is not a shortcut. Copies reach shops on November 12, 2026, and what you get in the box is A download code, not the game data. There is no disc install, no partial copy from the disc, nothing. Buying physical downloads exactly the same file as buying digital, and it does not save you a single gigabyte of storage or a minute of downloading.

That detail catches people out every generation, and it is worth knowing before you order a disc specifically to spare your connection.

What to do now instead of waiting for a number

The useful move is not to guess the size. It is to make sure that whatever it is, it fits.

Check what you have free. On PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, go into storage and look at the actual number rather than assuming. Most consoles that have been in use for a couple of years are far closer to full than their owner thinks.

Clear the obvious first. Games you have finished and the captures folder are where the space usually is. On PlayStation you can delete a game and keep the save; on Xbox you can move a game to external storage rather than deleting it, and move it back later.

If it is tight, add storage before November rather than during it. Prices on the drives that matter go strange around launch and Black Friday, and the drive you want is the one that works with your console rather than the cheapest one on the page. We have gone through which ones qualify on the storage guide.

Why a big number is likely, without pretending to know it

There are reasons to expect a large install without inventing a figure for it.

Modern console releases ship uncompressed or lightly compressed audio for multiple languages, high-resolution textures for 4K displays, and no longer duplicate assets across the disc the way last-generation games did to work around slow drives. An open-world game with a full voice cast in several languages is at the upper end of all three.

That reasoning tells you to free up space. It does not tell you a number, and this site is not going to turn it into one. The difference between those two sentences is the whole editorial policy.

The download and the pre-load are part of the wider question of how to buy it, which is on the pre-order page. Which machines the game runs on at all is on the platforms page.
